Dear Customer,

Below is a summary of things we need to know before we can accurately quote you on a timber top.

Please, if at all possible, for kitchen benches send through a sketch or plan specifying edges to have mouldings etc…

 

WHAT SPECIES OF TIMBER?

Please ask if there is a particular timber you’d like to use but is not listed.

Timbers subject to availability.

  • Pine
  • Macrocarpa
  • Blackwood
  • Ash
  • White Oak
  • Rimu

 

WILL YOUR TIMBER TOP BE USED INDOORS OR OUTDOORS?

This will give us an idea of the sanded finish you will require. Or is no sanding required? (laminated only)

 If you’d like your outdoor Macrocarpa top rough sawn please specify.

 

WHAT GRADE OF TIMBER WOULD YOU LIKE?

 Please note: Pine & Macrocarpa are most readily available in 2nd grade & Rustic.

 Blackwood, Ash, White Oak & Rimu in Clears only.

 Grades subject to availability.

  • Clears (A-grade timber. No knots or cracks) 
  • Second grade (tight knots)
  • Rustic (knots, cracks etc..) 

 

WHAT ARE YOUR DIMENSIONS?

 Length x Width x Thickness.

 NB Standard bench top thicknesses are 30mm though you can go up to approx 45mm.  Subject to availability.

 For kitchen bench tops we can only do lengths up to approx 3m. 

 

PLEASE SPECIFY THE EDGES THAT REQUIRE A MOULDING

NB Any sides sitting against a wall/cabinets or are to join another bench do not require mouldings, they are straight cut.

 

WHAT TYPE OF MOULDING?

  • 5mm round edge
  • Bevelled edge
  • Straight cut with a small arris.
  • Live edge

 

ARE THERE ANY CUT-OUTS FOR SINKS/HOBS etc…?

NB if so you will need to bring the sink &/or hob etc.. out to the mill & show our joiner exactly where you want it placed.

Top mounted sinks only.

 

ARE THERE ANY JOINS IN YOUR BENCHES?

e.g. for an L-shaped bench.

Please provide a plan.

 

Notes About our Bench Top Service

We don't have the facilities to finish bench tops on site here. Your top/s will have an all natural finish.

We recommend going to Versatile Products to get any advise on finishes.

Or for lacquering The Kitchen & Furniture Paint Shop

Upon picking up your timber top:

  • Please bring lots of blankets etc… to protect on its travels.
  • DO NOT get it wet before coating.
  • DO NOT leave in a hot car parked in the sun or a hot garage/shed etc….
  • Oil or spray ASAP. VERY IMPORTANT!
  • Make sure to do at least 1 coat all over including the underneath – very important! The top will need more than 1 coat.

 

We do NOT recommend using a whole timber slab for kitchen bench tops/fine dining tables etc…

There is likely to be movement in a slab. The bigger it is, the more likely.

Laminations are much more stable.

 

Macrocarpa

Ash Bench Top

Above we have an example of a laminated Ash bench top with a matte lacquered finish and a 5mm round edge. It is 35mm thick.

 

 

 

Rimu

 This is an example of a Rimu Hall Table Top. 45mm thick. The front & sides are finished with a 5mm round moulded edge. The back edge is finished with a straight cut (no 5mm moulded edge) to sit flush up against a wall. It has been lacquered in a matte finish.
